Chanted Meditations (Pujas)

Chanted meditations, or pujas, are beautiful chanted prayers sung in English which help us to receive inspiration and increase peace throughout the world. By drawing close to the enlightened beings we develop a calm, balanced mind and awaken our own potential for enlightenment.

In pujas with Lamrim we pause for 15 minutes of silent meditation on one of the stages of the path to enlightenment. Copies of the New Meditation Handbook, in which all 21 Lamrim meditations are explained, will be provided in the meditation room.

A Pure Life - The Eight Mahayana Precepts
The practice of taking and keeping the eight Mahayana Precepts is a special practice of moral discipline that is performed with bodhichitta motivation. The essence of the practice is to take eight precepts and keep them purely for a period of twenty four hours. On this special day we take vows to abandon killing, stealing, sexual activity, lying, taking intoxicants, sitting on a high or luxurious throne or seat, wearing jewellery or perfume, singing or dancing and eating more than one special meal at 12.30pm. Precepts

There are many benefits to practising moral discipline in this way. It helps us solve our day to day problems and creates good karma to take us to a fortunate rebirth in the future. It is a powerful method both for purifying negative karma and accumulating merit or good fortune and brings us closer to the happiness of enlightenment.
